Affliction 2020

This film focuses on digital addiction and its purpose is to show people that excessive use of digital technology can be harmful. We as a society are so reliant on their personal online devices to the point where we live through them, and the virtual world replaces their real one. My film, ‘Affliction’ aims to initiate conversation on the matter by presenting an abstract, dystopian narrative on the subject of digital control. The concept is derived from research into wealth disparity and the ever increasing presence of digital technology in the modern world. My target audience are people most affected by social media; Young adults aged 18-25 who are able to respond to the subject matter and perhaps adjust their social media habits after viewing the work.

My project focus on exploring the educational and playfulness of illustrations and how can the two aspects be better combined. I chose amazing creatures in the Amazon jungle as the topic. Exploring the diversity of Amazon jungle species and climate change issues is very educational for the everyday audience. Traditional games gave me inspiration to combine illustrations and puzzle games to increase the playfulness. At the same time, I combined the form of pop-up book and two-dimensional illustrations, and made a set of educational pop-up puzzle games in a new form about Amazon rainforest creatures.

The topic of this design is "Low nutrition culture" mainly represents the modern society, in the fast-paced way of life, everyone is affected by the fast food culture, slowly not to calm down to think of a kind of phenomenon, and in many kinds of fast food culture, mobile proportion is top priority, so I'm going to, from the perspective of the mobile phone in the fast food culture, many aspects to show the design theme.

Africa may have its problems, but the loyalty to the nature and the animals has always stood strong amongst all. This was the main inspiration for the project; Hunted. Poaching in Africa is at an all-time high and there are many movements trying to raise awareness to stop this illegal activity. However, with the lack of other countries involvements, it is proving harder to stop this and so light needs to be shed on the situation. There needs to be a change within Africa but also with help from others. This is not a fight one country can do alone. Many are affected when they hear about what is going on, but no one takes action. This prompted me to turn this project into an editorial awareness campaign.

The development of globalisation, consumer culture and hyper capitalism has led to a dysfunctional relationship between ourselves and our environment. The resources of land and sea are consumed as if they are limitless. Wilderness has been lost, in place is landscape, shaped by farming, settlements and transport. In this context A Coastal Journey is a photographic project that explores our coastal spaces. It is a project that records the environmental flux we find ourselves in. The line that distinguishes land from sea fluctuates to the rhythm of the tide, whilst the sea-level steadily rises over time. The endeavour to manage the shifting shape of the shoreline in the face of this gradual encroachment is documented in this project, as are artificial detritus washed-up on the tide. A Coastal Journey is a visual survey of an area that is the bodily extremity of an island nation. A nation with a complex identity and history.

My years as a student has given me the freedom to experiment withdesign styles while continuously pushing me to improve on my technical motion skills. For my Final Major ProjectI adapted the Samaritan’s Festival Branch to make it more accessible and appealing for an 18-25year old demographic through a motion design campaign. This demographic tend to shy away from vulnerability, especially young males, despite the fact that mental health issues affect this age group adversely. My goal wasto create avisual identity with a more informaland abstract approach to mental health both narratively and visually, more suited for this demographic and its festival surroundings.

My project is focused around folklore and its narratives, I chose to explore Aesop’s Fables as it is a well-known series of narratives each with their own moral at the end. The fables themselves were only passed through word of mouth when they first originated which I found highly interesting, since then; books featuring the fables have been made which inspired me to create my own featuring 14 of my favourite fables. I was influenced by illustrations of the 19th and 20th century which are often monochromatic and highly detailed, I wanted to incorporate this into my book whilst also modernising and individualising it.

I have a goal to show the importance of exposing unethical diet standards that are being promoted throughout social media daily. Across platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat etc, there are numerous amounts of "healthy diets" products being promoted. But the reality is, there is an overwhelming pressure that has been put onto young adults who are exposed to these posts day to day. These are the same people who will go onto trying out products, diets etc without understanding nor realising the affects it will have on their health. It is extremely important to reveal the dark side of what happens.

Having looked into the social environment of gaming it has been revealed that a male/female divide isn’t the issue so much as being able to enter the community as a new user with confidence. Looking into an event and application that combines elements of the E3 event and Comic Conventions alongside social applications that encourage similar interests. I believe that this is an important issue to look into and raise awareness as gatekeeping communities such as gaming can have a ripple effect into involvement in the industry itself as well as perpetuating the bad habits into future generations of users.

For my final major project, I wanted to focus on the theme of fantasy and create something for children that would spark their curiosity. I looked into folk legend's from around the world and decided on my three characters Pok, The Green Man and Tiny. Each of their stories leads onto an activity to be completed, these activities are wand making, planting seeds, and searching for bugs. Encouraging children to be imaginative and playful within nature through the use of these characters. The book is packaged in a box with some of the starting materials for the activities and I have made sure they are recyclable, biodegradable or re-usable.

These girls are constantly told to carry on, to not complain and that it could always be worse. However, it is time to break their everyday ritual.

Designing for good and change is important to me, my work here aims to inspire and empower these girls and give them a message of hope and motivation. I want them to believe if they work hard, they can overcome obstacles and achieve their aspirations.

Brighton’s population has seen a major growth by 12,400 people since 2012 with the city (like others) facing the challenge of housing. Specifically, 18-23 year old university students who caters to almost 41% of the population. However, geographical restrictions by the sea to the South and a surrounding national park means Brighton must build upwards in order to accommodate this demographic. Limited by time, the intensified rate of production has created low quality modular student housing (ie: private halls) where 90% of students experience problems with their housing; resulting in regular complaints by residents to which the underlying problems surrounding construction are overlooked.

In order to explain to university students this decline of their housing conditions, Tendencies in Form places them as the developer and architect. Provided with modular components, you must construct a personalised structure within a confined time period and infill space as a reflection of the pressures in which existing developers are facing in Brighton.

The artefact Dyslexia is a gift is a project constructed to change people’s perceptions about dyslexia by displaying the dyslexic advantage and strengths. This product has been developed for the purpose of creating awareness and the reasoning is that “Only 3% of the public believe dyslexia is a positive trait.” (YouGov, 2018). The objective is for people to recognise and maximise the strengths that dyslexia brings and to escape the challenges and misconceptions. Additionally, the outcome provides content for understanding and supporting dyslexic abilities in education and employment. The outcome has a bold tone of voice that is engaging through different formats, interactive features and enlightening information that delivers a positive attitude towards dyslexia.

This project focuses on fake news and misinformation regarding health and wellbeing. It explores pseudoscience, holistic medicine and complementary/alternative medicine. It takes the reader on a journey to understand the implications of alternative medicine, the reasons why it is a global issue and ways to combat the infodemic. This is a brief about the blue whale, the finished product of which includes a book, two posters, four postcards and about 30 different illustrations. At the beginning of the story book, I introduced the basic information and living habits of the blue whale, and then I began to reflect on the social problem of human pollution of the sea. This leads to the story of how plastic waste affects the ecology of blue whale communities.Next, I want to reflect the social phenomenon of human wantonly killing whales, so In the climax of the story, I added a lot of illustrations about human killing whales, so as to reflect the fact that the blue whale has been hunted to the verge of extinction by human.

In the end, I relied on my imagination and constructed a science fiction story about a whale leaving the ocean and escaping from the earth like a spaceship in search of a new home.I want to rely on this small storybook to arouse people's reflection on themselves. Should we also consider the changes of nature in the past 50 years while the development of science and technology? If human beings do not realize similar environmental problems, they will surely destroy their own technology in the end.

My project looks how to convey the descriptive language, dialect and tone of the novel 'Trainspotting' by Irvine Welsh, to a non-Scottish reader. My starting point came from my own cultural background of being half Japanese and wanting to know the history of my people. The first thing that came to mind was the nuclear bombing in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I wanted to look the after mark and the effects occurred to the individual people and how they had survived this story.

However reading through the information of the nuclear bombing I found out how some POW’s (prisoners of wars) were also killed in the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. They were not initially recognised as victims only until a few years ago they were officially named hikabshi that are survives of a nuclear bombing in Japan. I ended up reading about the tragic events and travels these POW’ had experienced seeing the forgotten history that most Japanese people never new about. Gaining this new interest I wanted to inform people about these stories from both English to Japanese people.

In a society where saving the environment is a hot topic of interest, women are being faced with the dilemma of having to choose between the environment and their pockets. Period products are not a luxury among women, they are a necessity. We should not have to budget to buy period products in the first place, so why are the environmentally friendly products over three times more expensive? What if I am a woman and I want to save the environment but do not have the choice or the funds to spend on expensive eco-friendly products? There should be more options and funding from the government to protect our women and our environment simultaneously.

My Final Major Project is a campaign to tackle the issue of period poverty. Using my own typeface, Mother Earth - inspired by the earth and the female form – I have created promotional activist material to inform people about the issues that women face with their periods and the added pressure of saving the environment.

WaitingRoom therapy was imagined as a response to the lack of good mental health resources provided to people who need it. Asking for help with such a personal issue can take a lot of courage, but so often people are offered little more than medication by their GP as a solution. Waiting lists for NHS treatment are months long and people are left without support during this time, with little knowledge of how they can help themselves. WaitingRoom is designed to fill that gap, with information, therapy techniques and recommended resource lists to help you to learn ways to manage your mental health and begin recovering. It isn’t a replacement for treatment but more of a guide to help to start you of on the right path.

My project centres around the little knick-knacks you find in charity shops. The ceramic ones of kids doing cute things, or weird animals doing human activities. They bring me a lot of joy, so I considered how I could translate that innocent joy into my practice. I thought of how they were no longer wanted, and that they were deserving of time in the spotlight. In response, I created a 100-page fully illustrated book (exploring the possible backstories for how the character ended up in the pose they were moulded into) along with textile pieces dedicated to them.

There are countless variations of the same self help advice circulating the world helping people lead happy lives; this being something I have had my own struggles with I wanted to add my own voice to the conversation. In my opinion, happiness is not something that can be taught because everyone experiences it differently, and instruction is intrinsically linked to most written advice as it comes with the experience and opinion of a third party. I created a nine piece jigsaw puzzle map (double sided - one side being an overview and the other a more in depth look at each topic) covered in practical, physical advice that anyone could follow to lead a happier life, helping people to ‘find their own way’.

With the popularity of the Internet, people's activities on social media are more and more frequent.

This kind of social network provides people with more ways of life. But these lifestyle will break people's inherent thinking and logic. Through the direct connection between audiovisual high-tech equipment and human senses, potential companions in the senses are stimulated. It can participate in the formation of each subject's world view and make it become the support of irrationality. This experience has left supporters addicted to social media. This is the over entertainment of social networks. They consume their emotions here. People can't speak without emoticons. Without the help of people or things, people can't output their ideas. Gradually, people's happiness, anger, sorrow and joy become more prosaic, unable to get rid of these emotions.

Contemporary Network Portrait expresses five different network images by designing five different filters. Madonna, victims, addicts, merchandise and anonymous. Through the interactive form of filter, the audience is reminded not to fall into the over entertainment trap of social network.

This project divides the reasons why graduates have common workplace social problems into three categories: shyness, lack of initiative and self centeredness. Through the interpretation of the three situation causes and the behavior performance can better understand the social confusion of graduates in the workplace. At the same time, the publication reflects the impact of these emotions and tries to give some suggestions to help graduates out of difficulties.

The visual concept of the project is about coverage. Graduates are unable to communicate effectively with colleagues in the workplace because of their personality and emotional problems. Visually, I choose to use three different textures to express three kinds of workplace social situations, and then cover them on the face of graduates, so that the audience can not fully see them, which means that there is no effective communication

I find it interesting how the origin of fears can be a defining moment for someone, possibly impacting them for the rest of their life. I want to start a conversation about fears and how they change over time, by talking to focus groups of different ages, whilst discussing and researching the different types of fears that people have and what factors impact what they fear, such as age and gender. Throughout my research I looked at the different visual languages used by creatives in the industry today, and how they have used colour, shape, sound ect to communicate to the viewer intangible, but universal, emotions. This became an important element throughout the project. By using a metaphor of a cat to explore how Alzheimer’s affects a person, I hope it will help to raise awareness of the disease to a younger audience, help people be mindful of the person with the condition and open conversations across age groups without the issue seeming overwhelming.

This Is What It Is to Be Happy is a visual love letter to Mother Nature. Through a familial muse, Turner constructs a photographic series that vicariously reflects her feelings towards Mother Nature, and her offering of escapism. The haptic imagery in this series plays with light and colour to create a sense of immersion, to bring warmth and reassurance to its audience. Shot entirely on analogue film, This Is What It Is to Be Happy pays homage to the retro-culture associated with Turner’s generation. This is also an aesthetic choice, one that highlights Turner’s ethos of ‘feeling over formal’ photography, unrestricted by pressures of ‘professionalism’ in favour of depicting genuine moments of mistake-making, fun.

An advocate for the much-touted female-gaze, Turner has created a project that is soft, highly aesthetic and reclaims the female form for a female audience. Drawing inspiration from independent films, and the ‘manic pixie dream girl’ trope - “that bubbly, shallow cinematic creature that exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors” (Rabin), Turner takes ownership of ‘girly’ by creating a project that is unabashedly ‘beautiful’ for art’s sake.

This project started with my thinking and reflection on the concept of time. Our subjective perceptions to time are not always consistent with objective. We sometimes feel that the pass of time is fast or slow. In contemporary life, the concept of time is associated with speed. The relationship between time and space is ignored. This leads to a sense of loss of control to time. In this project, I explored the diverse concept of time. In my publication I collected eight concepts of time in different societies. In addition, the publication also contains sociologists' discussion of contemporary time. I hope people can reflect on the contemporary time and understand it through these concepts and discussions.

The gender gap between women and men working within STEM subjects has been narrowing in recent years, but still has a large preference towards men. Develop Her is a project aiming to make understanding the core concepts of coding accessible to young girls aged 11-18, progressing through their GCSEs and A-levels.

A common misconception surrounding coding is that the learning curve is too steep to tackle independently. I wanted to dispel this by introducing concepts with creative visual examples as visual feedback is instantaneous and gratifying.

Dever is a digital web application that breaks coding down into manageable sections with interactive elements implemented using JavaScript, Processing and p5. These allow beginners to quickly produce visually impressive applications and art.

Dever is available online to play with at www.dever.hexahue.com.

My final major project explored the ideas of self-expression, personas and characterisation of three iconic musicians, such as Elton John, David Bowie and Queen. I explored how fashion plays a big part in creating the onstage persona but how could I show that in a new interesting way. This is where I came up with the vinyl record, The vinyl showed who they were as an artist or at least who they wanted to be within that album. Each record was different from the next they never stuck to trends they all had a unique feel just like the person who was on it. So it got me thinking with each record there was a different persona and personality. I focused on bringing a new look and experience for modern generations as well as older generations to fall back in love with the vinyl record. Because the music these artist play help shape other peoples self-expression.

My Final Major Project is focused on the Aztecs. I have created seven hand printed and bound publications through the means of printmaking. Each story either revolves around the myths and stories that the Aztecs would have supposedly shared, or around the Gods and information about them as well as the Aztecs and their rituals on how they would please the Gods. When all of the books are laid out together in a particular order, the covers will depict the Mayan Calendar.

“Quarantine Escape” was focused on how the quarantine has influenced my housemates’ dreams and pastimes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Each bedroom they were confined to in the lockdown becomes a window into their world. Their rooms are designed like a lo-fi zine lacking in any excitement then your phone (which is a nod to how technology has also aided peoples escapism during this time) reveals a window and postcard to the things they have dreamt based on their dream journals and conversations we have had.

Throughout history religion has played a huge impact on our cultural concept of beauty-it has often been drawn from the Garden of Eden or attributed to god-like features. I explore these religious ideas of heaven/afterlife in this painting series, representing Christianity, Hindiusm and Islam. Each includes symbolism within the religion and aculturally accurate environment and atmosphere.

Here to Help explores an overlooked sector of the NHS and healthcare sector. Pharmacies are under great pressure due to underfunding, understaffing and many other issues. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, working in a pharmacy during these unprecedented times has been extremely difficult with mass panic buying of paracetamol and thermometers and overordering of medication which I have seen first-hand, working as a pharmacy advisor and dispenser in a my local community. The immense strain pharmacies are under on a day to day basis and the misunderstanding the public have on what pharmacies do was presented by the derogatory comments labelling pharmacy staff as ‘till girls’ and ‘pretend doctors’, highlighting the need to shine a light on this topic.

This project reflects the relationship between migrant workers and their families under the influence of policies through the propaganda slogans of different attitudes of the government in different periods.

Under the background of China's rapid urbanization, urban and rural areas are developing in a dual way, with a large number of rural labour flowing into cities. However, under the influence of the household registration system, migrant workers and their families cannot get the benefits of citizens in cities, so China's rural areas are hollowed. These migrant workers used to enter the city under the call of the government, but now they return home under the call of the government. The state between them and their families changes with the change of the government's will.

Therefore, I described the helplessness and powerlessness of migrant workers and their families under the influence of the political system through publications.

Mathematics might not have been our favorite subject in school, but what we weren’t told as little students is the fact that mathematics is the language of our universe. All creation can be explained in mathematical terms. It is a wholly-contained, pure and consistent system. From the way planets to move, to how things float on water or fall on the ground with gravity, math explains every single thing in our universe. Math is spiritual mysticism in disguise.

This project aims let audience know about numerology. We determined our fate first and then the corresponding day and time. This determined our personal numerology including our life path number and destiny number. Every person has a set of numerology numbers that can affect anything from a personal life path to career choices, romantic relationships and more. If you know the numerology numbers and how their energies affect your life, you can use them to navigate life decisions and live your life to its fullest potential.

Earth is the only place where we human beings live. In this du homeland, man is the master of the earth. In addition to our class, there are many many living substances, such as flowers, trees, insects, fish, birds and animals. These creatures live in the same environment as us and make up this big family together.

This primitive ecological balance is extremely rare on a global scale, and we may only see it today in places where humans have not gone before. While the natural environment provides the environmental resources for human survival and development, it is also destroyed by human beings. Only when there is a harmonious balance between nature and nature will the future of mankind be optimistic. My video is very simple and easy to understand to express the main point of environmental protection. Hopefully, more organizations will get things done. Protect the earth together.

Different weather will have an impact on people's physiology, which will trigger psychological reactions. Rainy days will make anyone feel depressed, and sunny days will make everyone feel better. Some research reports indicate that people living in sunny areas have fewer cases of depression. But in areas with long winter time and a lot of rainy weather, the incidence of depression and sadness is higher. Emotional Skies is a photographic project that aims to explores unpredictable skies. This project focuses on various kinds of skies in an objective way, which is collecting images, documents as well as researches.
